I just finished this book and all through the story I thought this is a five star book. It had very interesting characters and story lines. All through the book it left you to considered if a character was one of the good guys or one of the bad. It had enough turns and twist to hold the reader's interest and keep you guessing where the story was going and what was going to happen to the main characters. Then why give it only three stars? Simple, the ending. After all the great story telling through-out the book, the author ends every thing in about two or three pages. I can't tell you how disappointed I was. It was like this author was on a page count or time limit and had to end the book that fast. I really hope the author considers taking back this story and spend some time on the ending that justifies the rest of the book!!!!!!!!!Product details

Following on the heels of the prequel short story, The Encounter, Blowback is a gripping romantic thriller which also sets the stage for book two in the trilogy. I recommend it and will reread it. I have purchased book two and can't wait to read more from the Black Cipher Files.
Lucas and Jamie met for an "anonymous" hot, brief encounter in the prequel. He is a discredited former FBI agent and she is a NSA field operative using a recently deceased CIA agent's identity as a cover to find the persons kidnapping and drugging agents from the various alphabet agencies. This book picks up immediately where that short story ends, with Jamie in the hands of the kidnappers.
This book is well written, with good character and plot development. Jamie is conflicted. She has strong feelings for Lucas, which are at odds with her training and her personal rule to never get involved. As the story unfolds, she doesn't know who to trust. But even though she always works solo, she comes to realize Lucas isn't letting her face danger alone, which scares her almost as much as her attraction to him.
Blowback is the remarkable first book by author Lisa Hughley. Jamie and Lucas are an unlikely match because they don't do relationships! He is ex FBI and she is NSA. Seemingly incompatible, both characters hold deep secrets and life experiences that hinder any romantic ideas!
Missing and drugged NSA agents, a pattern of murdered parents 13 years ago linking the agents and government agencies conflicted in cover-ups! The unpredictable sequence of events keep the reader on their toes as the twists and turns keep the story moving at a rapid pace! Tearworthy and steamy this book checks all the emotional vibes

Lucas and Jamie have a little one night wonder, then go their separate ways. Jamie, who is an agent for the NSA, gets kidnapped and Lucas is mysteriously there to help her escape her captors. Thus begins a wild ride of intrigue, mistaken identity, and conspiracy.
Blowback is extremely fast paced. I know a lot of books are described this way, but really - Blowback never stops with the action. The backstory is woven throughout, untangling threads as the plot progresses. The writing style is different from any I have read before. Blowback is written in first person, which is not my favorite but Jamie is such an isolated person, it made sense that the story is held in her POV. Details are sparse, but complete. There is nothing unnecessary in the story, no flowing descriptives to get in the way of the story.
While there are more books in this series, Blowback is a self contained story. There is a certain level of closure between Lucas and Jamie, though the arc of the story is yet to be resolved.
Definitely more of a suspense with a dash of romance.
Bottom line - I will be reading the next two books in the series. Very intriguing storyline and an interesting, readable style. If you like suspense with a little bit of romance, I would recommend Blowback.
I obtained this free e-book from and I am voluntarily writing a review. Jaime at age 15 was orphaned by a terrible car explosion which killed both her parents and brother and injuring her. While recovering in the hospital she is recruited to be a secret agent for one of our government alphabet agencies in exchange for the protection of her younger sister who believes she is dead. The story opens with her drugged and kidnapped in a warehouse and the abductors bargaining chip for her co-operation is the guy she hooked up with the night before. I gave this a lower rating because the female lead Jaime is cold, emotionally isolated and I as a reader felt no connection. The male lead Lucas is Ex FBI who is much more likeable. The story pulls together in the last two chapters but ends quickly leading into the next in the series with unfinished threads hanging.
The story, implausible as it was, caught me up in the action, but it accelerated into overdrive in the last few chapters, and screeched to a halt just short of a cliffhanger. I was left feeling disappointed and disinclined to continue on with the series.
The book really could have benefited from an editor, for correcting grammar and spelling mistakes, and to shape it into a very good story. Minor irritations to me were the paragraphs that had sentences repeating the same information, and the date rape drug rohypnol was spelled rophynol.
